Clara’s Welcomes Guests at St. James Hotel Once Again

Clara’s Courtyard Coffee and Gifts Opens in October

Serving up Starbucks Coffee and Internet Access

 (Red Wing, MN) For over 70 years Clara Lilyblad, proprietress of the St. James Hotel for most of the 20^th century, served the finest home-cooked meals around and folks came from far and wide to take in a delicious meal at "Clara’s Place" as the hotel was affectionately known during her tenure. Why, the railroad even adjusted the train schedules so that hungry travelers could arrive in Red Wing on time for a scheduled supper at Clara’s, as her reputation for fine cuisine had spread throughout the Midwest.

Now guests at the St. James Hotel can once again experience the comfortable ambiance and wholesome food at Clara’s, a new café opening in the St. James Hotel courtyard area in October.

But in addition to 19^th century charm and comfort, this Clara’s will offer decidedly 21^st century amenities. Starbucks coffee will be served at the beverage kiosk, free Internet stations will be set up in the café, and wireless remote access will be available in the courtyard allowing business guests to plug in and catch up with the office or conduct a casual business meeting while enjoying a cup of Starbucks coffee, cappuccino, pastry or snack.

"The St. James has always been renowned for its fine dining, ranging from the days of "Clara’s Place" to the present day Port Restaurant, which has earned three consecutive Wine Spectator awards," said General Manager Craig Scott. "The partnership between the St. James and a quality company such as Starbucks will further enhance our ability to offer our customers the absolute best products available. We’re proud to be the only establishment in the Red Wing area serving Starbucks coffee."

Clara’s will serve an assortment of pastries, Starbucks coffees and snacks and will be open from 7 am to 8 pm daily. Clara’s will also feature a gift shop offering various sundries in addition to books, magazines and gift items including Red Wing specialty product gift baskets, always a popular souvenir or corporate gift item.

The courtyard surrounding Clara’s is located just outside the hotel lobby, and will continue to feature a garden setting with trees, benches and comfortable seating accommodating 30-35 guests.

The opening of Clara’s marks the first phase of enhancements the St. James is implementing this year. The hotel has also opened a concierge desk in the lobby, which will dispense brochures, maps and information on special events and happenings around Red Wing. Plans are also underway to refurbish the courtyard and Main Street entrance, a project that will be completed in November.

In addition to Clara’s, the St. James features three full service restaurants. The award-winning Port Restaurant serves dinner daily in a warm club-like atmosphere on the lower level, the Veranda, a bright, airy space overlooking the Mississippi River, is open for lunch and dinner and Jimmy’s Pub, a turn-of-the-century club, which serves a wonderful selection of beers, wines and spirits, and offers entertainment on weekends.
